Sky Saxon, 1937-2009
Sky Saxon, bass player, lead singer, and auteur of of the 60s garage band The Seeds, has died in Austin. The Seeds were simple, enthusiastic, and fun, and their revival on Lenny Kaye's Nuggets compilations provided early punk rockers with inspiration and reaffirmation. Though after a few hits wider fame eluded them, they did manage to get on The Beverly Hillbillies, and Saxon over the years continued to dish out, in the Seeds franchise and elsewhere, maximum rock. Austin 360 interviewed him in March and noted, "he talks like a man who has spent more time than most on the business end of psychedelic technology, musical, chemical, spiritual, whatever."
