We asked Tom Robbins if he'd like to go to a party. Tom thanked us for the invite and asked what the occasion was. Well, Tom, we said, actually you'll be the guest of honor -- it's sort of a tribute; we know a bunch of people who are big fans of yours, and would like to talk to you about writing, and maybe (here we pushed a gum wrapper around with our foot) their own career ambitions in that regard. Tom's countenance clouded, and did not brighten when we offered him a share of the take. Shoot. If these guys from Manhattan Media (flagship property: NY Press) who sent out this flyer (click to enlarge) can ask $125 for Matt Taibbi, we could have gotten two or three bills for Tom. Wonder what Wayne Barrett's up to?
