Advance: Staten Island Ferry Incident Caused by Transformer Failure

ferryshot.jpgYesterday's Staten Island Ferry crash hard landing was caused by a transformer malfunction, the Staten Island Advance reports. One of the John W. Marchi's transformers went out, which we would have thought meant the vessel would rely on the other three transformers on board. But these, apparently in response, "deactivated" too, leaving the Marchi with no force to redirect itself or soften the impact of the landing. Investigators are trying to figure out why. Meanwhile the crew's alcohol tests have come back negative; drug test results are pending. Ferry service has returned to normal.
