OBIES 1963-1964

More than 500 participants and well-wishers of the off-Broadway theatre converged on the Village Gate on Saturday afternoon to applaud winners of the Ninth Annual Village Voice Off-Broadway Awards and have a good time. Colleen Dewhurst, who won the Best Actress "Obie" last year, was on hand to pass out the coveted parchments.

...The presentations were greeted with enthusiasm by the large invited audience. When an award to Julian Beck was announced -- for his set design for "The Brig" -- Beck and his wife, Judith Malina, were just coming in the door. Under a strain from the two weeks of federal trial that resulted from the closing of their theatre -- a trial destined to end two days later in conviction -- the Becks recieved a prolonged standing ovation as they came to the platform...
