Robert De Niro Also Scammed by Art Dealer, D.A. Says; New Charges Brought

Art dealer Lawrence Salander was indicted in March for a $88 million art scam in which he allegedly failed to recompense several high-end customers, including tennis star John McEnroe. Now the Manhattan D.A.'s office has re-indicted Salander for selling off paintings by the late artist Robert De Niro -- father of actor Robert De Niro -- without cutting in his movie star son. Salander pleaded not guilty to the previous 100-count indictment and has been out on $1 million bail since, working on a new art gallery in Millbrook while bankruptcy attorneys try to find a way to recompense victims of Salander's previously-alleged frauds. The director of his previous gallery, Leigh Morse, has also been charged.

A friend of Salander told New York magazine earlier this year, "He's a street kid who's read Ruskin. I don't know anybody else who so naturally recognizes the brutality of the world but lives in such a fine way."
