2 Paintings Stolen from Sleepy Museum on W. 107th Street

The Nicholas Roerich Museum 319 West 107 Street is one of the city's least-well-known bastions of art, which may have made it easy for a crook to get in among the two dozen or so visitors who came in on June 24, and to take one of the Maestro's paintings right off the wall and carry it away. At first no one noticed -- which is thought to have emboldened the thief to return and steal a second painting four days later. Or maybe word got out that the place was easy pickings, and a second robber did the job.
Surveillance cameras didn't capture much evidence, alas, but the police have sent us these reproductions of the missing artworks -- at left, "Talung Monastery" (12"x16", oil on canvas, valued at $70,000); at right, "The Himalayas" (10"x14", pencil on paper, valued at $20,000). Keep your eye out for them at street fairs and out in front of the bigger museums.
