Brooklyn Council Candidate Was Jailed for Robbery, Faces Sex Charges

There are two candidates for the Republican nomination to replace Brooklyn councilmember Bill de Blasio, who is running for public advocate. Joe Nardiello just got a big leg up on his opponent, George Smith, as it has been revealed that Smith has done time, and currently faces a sex abuse rap. The New York Post reports Smith went away for a year for a 1996 robbery in which he impersonated a cop. "It was not a violent crime," Smith says of the robbery. "Everybody deserves a second chance " As for the Nassau County charges of forcible touching, sexual misconduct, harassment and sexual abuse, these were brought by Smith's estranged wife, says his lawyer, who also suggested the charges were motivated by personal animosity. The New York City Alliance against Sexual Assault has demanded Smith suspend his candidacy until the sex charges are sorted out; he has a court date scheduled a week before the September 15 primary. Smith describes himself as being "in the party rental business."
