Groups Sues Planners to Stop Sunset Park Rezoning

sunsetpark.jpg
Our ever-busy city planners are eager to rezone Sunset Park. To hear them tell it, the rezoning is benign, aiming "to preserve neighborhood character and scale by placing height limits throughout the area, allowing for new development where appropriate at a height and scale that is in keeping with the existing context..." But a local consortium says the plan will lead to more luxury housing and megastores (of the sort already inundating the city) and are suing to block it. The combined forces of the Chinese Staff and Workers' Association, five churches, and a few citizens claim the Department of City Planning didn't properly assess the plan's impact on the neighborhood -- though it's already been approved by the Community Board with some revisions. The suit, which names DCP chair Amanda Burden, is brought by South Brooklyn Legal Services, the director of which complained to the Times about the plan in May, and the Asian American Legal Defense and Education Fund.
