Early Saturday morning, a man entered LaGuardia's Terminal C with a bag containing "
a set of batteries and wires attached to what looked like an electrical power strip with a toggle," says the
New York Times. The
Daily News says he also had "what appeared to be
a detonator in his hand." Security officers noticed and apprehended him, and authorities charged him with
terrorist threats, placing a false bomb or hazardous substance in the first degree, and placing a false bomb or hazardous substance in a transportation facility. The man is identified as Scott McGann, a Union Square peddler with roots in the San Francisco Bay area who had a ticket for home that morning; his mother says he suffers from catatonic schizophrenia, for which he has
previously been hospitalized. He's at Bellevue now, pending a psychiatric examination.
