Plaxico Burress Indicted; Pierce Gets Off

Plaxico5.jpgGiant wide receiver Plaxico Burress has been indicted by a grand jury on charges stemming from his self-administered gunshot wound in a Manhattan club last year. He's up for two counts of criminal possession of a weapon and one of reckless endangerment, both in the second degree. No indictment was returned against Burress' former teammate Antonio Pierce. At his grand jury hearing, which had been delayed a few times, Burress was suitably contrite, but that does not seem to have contravened the self-evident facts of the case in jurors' minds. Maybe he should have listened to our suggestions.

Burress had an expired, out-of-state carry permit when he shot himself in the leg at the Latin Quarter on November 9, 2008. In April, Burress was cut by the Giants with a generous severance. Mayor Bloomberg called for Burress' imprisonment, which may yet come to pass as the weapons charges carry a three-and-a-half year minimum in our gun-unfriendly jurisdiction, and a 15-year max. (Mike Florio of the Sporting News flat-out says, "Plaxico Burress is going to jail.")

Update: Clyde Haberman wonders why Bloomberg was less proactive when Vito Fossella was caught driving around Virginia "plastered," presenting an at least comparable threat to public safety.
