Sanford Declines Lt. Gov's Generous Offer to Take Over

msanfordsmall.jpgSouth Carolina Lieutenant Governor Andre Bauer's generous offer to take over the Governorship from Mark Sanford has been rebuffed. "I'm not going to be railroaded out of this office by political opponents or folks who were never fans of mine in the first place," says Sanford.

(Savannah station WSAV puts it more mischievously: "Sanford says, as much as he might like to take Lt. Gov. Andre Bauer up on his offer, he will not resign the governorship.")

Who can blame him? More folks are coming forward to offer similar assistance. John Hawkins of Right Wing News, for example, says he "likes" Sanford and that he "certainly doesn't appear to be a serial philanderer like Bill Clinton," but still wants him to quit because "what he did was morally wrong." (Hawkins doesn't feel that way about John Ensign's affair, which makes us, trusting as we are, suspicious of his motives.)

We have no direct interest in the affairs of South Carolina (though we wish its citizens well) and we're not even sure it makes any difference who's governor, but we really hope Sanford shows more fidelity to this cause than he did to his marriage. We could use the laughs.
