LOCATION: 212 Ave A, Manhattan.

An off-duty bouncer at an East Village nightclub was slain and two other people were wounded when gunfire erupted during a sidewalk melee, the police say.

Police identified the slain bouncer as Eric Pagan, 42, a single father with a daughter and an adopted son. He was declared dead at Bellevue Hospital. A second man was shot in one hand. A third was hit in the neck. Both were listed in stable condition at Bellevue.

The Daily News reported in this morning's paper that Pagan was trying to break up a fight outside the Forbidden City nightclub. One witness tells the News that the suspect got out of a van, shot one man, then walked up to Pagan and shot him in the forehead. Then, the shooter got back into his van and drove away.

The Post reports that Pagan had been trying to help a customer find his keys when a passing car bumped some of the patrons. That started a confrontation, leading to Pagan's attempt to stop the fight.
