Thompson Said to Be DC 37's Choice

thompson.jpg Looks like Bill Thompson's getting a break in his race of mayor: Liz Benjamin says he's rumored to have the DC 37 endorsement locked up. That's the city's largest municipal workers union, whose name came up last week when the city council, like the Mayor's office, followed their example by raising staff salaries. DC 37 backed Mayor Bloomberg in the last election, which revealed divisions within the union.

Thompson had recently picked up the endorsements of the RWDSU (unsurprising, considering how Bloomberg was treating them) and Working Families Party, at which Bloomberg seemed to think he had a shot...

With a ten-point lead, we don't expect Bloomberg to worry too much, though Azi Paybarah has noticed that the Mayor has begun to attack Thompson -- strangely -- on his campaign contributors, portraying him as a pawn of "real estate and development interests." (Thompson has noticed too.) This may portend a I'm-too-rich-to-buy-off strategy, or be a mere fit of mayoral pique expressed by press release. Or maybe someone or something told the Mayor that it's time to go negative.

(Our own suggestion to Thompson is that he put up better pictures of himself at his web site for us to swipe.)
