Thousands Attend Michael Jackson Birthday Event in Prospect Park
Despite sometimes disagreeable weather, thousands showed up in Prospect Park on Saturday for Spike Lee's birthday tribute to Michael Jackson. Borough President Marty Markowitz proclaimed August 29th "Michael 'King of Pop' Jackson Memorial Day." "It was great to see so many people out without anything crazy jumping off," says Mikey McFly. "One highlight," says Black Butterfly, "was a little body who couldn't have been more than four (he was tiny!) jumped out in a fedora and white glove, and started moonwalking, hit all of Michael's signature moves, and then he went up on his toes! The crowd went nuts." Shouts from the Stoop was annoyed that the event got more coverage than the weekend's rededication of the Maryland Militia monument. The Brooklyn Paper called the party "a complete success." Reverend Al Sharpton did the invocation; DJ Spinna closed the proceedings with "Man in the Mirror." Jackson would have been 51.
