Times: Carolyn Maloney Won't Run Against Gillibrand

Categories: Featured, Politics
cmaloney.jpg It looks like Congresswoman Carolyn Maloney isn't going to run against Kirsten Gillibrand after all.

Though she seemed hot to challenge the appointed senator in 2011 from the left, various forces conspired against her:

President Obama began leaning on potential Gillibrand challengers, dissuading Steve Israel and Carolyn McCarthy. 60 Democrats sent Maloney a letter urging her to back off. Maloney quoted someone else saying "nigger' and got slammed for it. She found herself obliged to delay her proposed campaign...

Meanwhile Gillibrand, schooled by Chuck Schumer, kept moving left, taking more liberal positions on guns and gay rights. NARAL gave Gillibrand an early endorsement, as did several politicians. And, of course, she is way ahead on money.

A lot can happen in 14 months but Maloney couldn't even get off the blocks. The Times reports that she'll claim she has bigger fish to fry in the House, where she has accrued considerable seniority. Certainly her Congressional work will be more productive than losing.
