Vintage Voice: Read Our Old Stories at Google!

Categories: Featured, Media

Google has finally uploaded our back issues, which stretch all the way back to our debut on October 26, 1955, online. (It cost five cents then; it costs you nothing now. Vive le Internet!) Interestingly, Google's news blog announcement links to Lester Bangs' classic Iggy story, "Blowtorch in Bondage." You can read that whole issue -- the one pictured, from March 28, 1977, and apparently featuring Spinal Tap -- and hundreds of others. Read long-unseen Feiffer cartoons and Andrew Sarris' profile of Herve Villechaise! See us denounce Carmine DeSapio! Get mad at our coverage of ancient history as well as of current events! Happy hunting.

So this one is VERY esoteric.

I'm guessing the mid-70s. A feature piece, not on the cover, about a gentle cult whose members dressed all in white ... they were very clean, quite mysterious, lived communally, and to my recollection had neither recruitment nor socio-political goals.

Wagamumps? Magawumps? Something odd like that, though SEARCH doesn't help. Anyone find the article? Or know anything about them?

Much appreciated. I'll check back periodically...now December 2012.

Been trying to find a review of the musical adaptation Truman Capote's The Grass Harp that opened at the Martin Beck, Nov. 2, 1971. These old eyes have worked at it as long as they're able. Any help out there?

I am happy. . . at long last I found the article about my being a go-go dancer in Alaska when they were building the pipeline.  It was written by Howard Smith and I find, 35 years later, his son is the architect of one of our artist residency buildings where I am the Director.  Round and round we go.

Can anyone help me find a copy of an ad that ran in the Village Voice between 1964ish and 1969ish for D'Naz Leather?

I'm trying to find a copy of an ad that ran in your paper between 1964ish and 1969is for D'Naz Leather. Is this possible?

Dennis, that would have been 1969 and there was a picture of you, John and David Hooton and the ad was called Founding Fathers. David Hooton  Hope this helps.

I am looking for the same thing or any information of D'naz. If I find anything I can forward that to you.

That is very interesting to read old stories.

Google seems to have VERY selectively uploaded SOME issues - HUGE GAPS - a couple of issues for some years and NONE at all for whole other years - and Google does not respond to e-mails asking when or IF they intend to upload anymore. VV should pull the Google coverage and upload the archives themselves - this is a joke.

Few people may agree but not me! Love has nothing to do with what you are expecting to get . . . Only with what you are expected to give. . . . Which is everything.

are you kidding... seriously? I've read this twice and I still don't get it. It's about as confusing as a keep bondage video. no, probably more so. Oh well. Thanks for the post. I'm sure I'll figure out this bondage mess eventually.

Great news about the entire Voice being available on-line (and for free!).

The problem is that either Google's confused or I am.

Of course, I could be merely incompetent. But one article, for which I've hunted for years in vain, seems to defy all my search efforts.

Try finding H. Dudar's marvelous interview of the legendary Gershon Legman: "Love and Death (and schmutz): G. Legman's Second Thoughts."

The article appeared in the May 1, 1984 issue of the Voice.

If you were to have any success finding the interview, please e-mail me the link. ASAP!

Many thanks!

Cool, but it seems to have a gap in the late 80s-early 90s. Try searching for articles on early Wigstock for instance, or Dennis Cooper's queer zine article from September 4th, 1990.
