Brooklyn Families get keys to their Habitat condos

Forty one families who put in at least 300 hours of construction work on Habitat for Humanity's Atlantic Avenue condos were given their keys today.

Fourteen thousand volunteers have contributed work to build the project since 2007. Members of the '69 Mets spent two days helping out last month as part of the President's United We Serve Volunteer Program.

Habitat estimates that green construction will save the inhabitants, all first-time homeowners making between 40-80% of the federal median income for New York, up to 30% on their utility bills (pdf). Most-awesome ecofriendly detail: the front doors of the apartments are made of wood milled fr0m last year's Rockefeller Center christmas tree.
