David Horowitz (Sort of) Accuses Voice of Anti-Semitism, Misquotes Himself

tomorrowright.jpgYou haven't really made it in this business till David Horowitz -- former leftwing nut turned rightwing nut -- has called you an anti-Semite. He did it only in a roundabout way in his post, "Witch-hunters and anti-Semites at the Village Voice", which accuses us of "an attack on me as a Jew (surprise!)" and of being "part of the chorus calling for a second Holocaust to finish the job that Hitler started." But we think we get his drift.

Horowitz -- founder of the "Discover the Networks," a site mapping the vast left-wing conspiracy -- has other complaints about his appearance in our Rightbloggers column this week, the most damning (besides the anti-Semitism, we mean) being that we doctored one of his quotes...

We have Horowitz saying, "Hill is one of a community of black intellectuals promoted well beyond their abilities." Horowitz says aha! What he really wrote was: "Hill is one of a community of black intellectuals -- Cornel West and Michael Eric Dyson are two obvious others -- promoted well beyond their abilities." "Notice there are no ellipses in the Village Voice account," he adds.

We felt bad about this and wanted to make amends, but first, just to be thorough, we went back and checked the original to see where we had failed. There we found: "Hill is one of a community of black intellectuals promoted well beyond their abilities -- Michael Eric Dyson and Cornel West are two obvious others -- who are poisoning the minds of black youth with" etc.

Son of a gun -- Horowitz misquoted himself! If you were of a suspicious turn of mind, you might think Horowitz re-positioned the Dyson-West clause to make it look as if we'd offered a gutted quote rather than a partial one.

Maybe you believe we should have added an ellipsis after the bit we quoted, on the grounds that Horowitz's sentence was not yet done and the remainder of his rant might clarify his meaning. Fair enough: We will happily reproduce the full Horowitz here:

Hill is one of a community of black intellectuals promoted well beyond their abilities -- Michael Eric Dyson and Cornel West are two obvious others -- who are poisoning the minds of black youth with the idea that politically correct murderers like Assata Shakur are heroes, and patriotic Americans are devils incarnate.
Doesn't that make him sound more reasonable? Or maybe that doesn't do him justice either -- maybe we should have reprinted his entire article. Then people would get where he's coming from. (Alternately, you could click on the differently-colored words in the paragraph, which would take you to the original. What won't the internet think of next?)

We await further denunciations by Horowitz as worse than Hitler, etc.
