Endorsement Fever! Thompson Gets a Paper, Aborn Gets Gay City, Skaller Gets Animal Activists

Today Bill Thompson got his first newspaper endorsement -- from the Amsterdam News. Ha! Bloomberg's got two dozen of those, and the Voice is counting the hundred-dollar bills from his office as we speak. And AmNews is only endorsing for the primary. But wait -- Thompson's got a trump card: the primary backing of Caribbean Life! Eh, the Bloombergers say, they've got the Haitian Times.

In the turbo-charged Manhattan D.A. race, Richard Aborn is juiced to have the backing of Gay City News, which calls him "the stand-out reformer in this field" for his work on gun control, the Amadou Diallo case, and the Citizens Crime Commission. And we all know how gay the D.A. race is...

Also, Aborn's got the musicians' AFM Local 802 for his "undeniable progressive record of results." But hold on! Manhattan Beep Scott Stringer comes out for Cy Vance ("great vision, sound judgment and varied experience"), as does the Black Law Enforcement Alliance and the Barack Obama Democratic Club of East Harlem. Leslie Crocker-Snyder, meanwhile, lately won the support of several police groups and seems to be working on Robert Morgenthau, who has already endorsed Vance.

Public Advocate candidate Mark Green just rolled out some big guns: Congressional leaders John Conyers and Henry Waxman. (No, they're not from around here, but that's the way the big boys play.)

The Freelancers Union has video-endorsed Comptroller candidate David Yassky for giving its peeps a tax break ("Can David Yassky make freelancers gazillionaires?"); "Jackie," a "producer," says she'll buy "a new pair of headphones" with her savings.

And Brooklyn city council candidate Josh Skaller has received the support of Animal Friendly NYC ("Political Action for Animals"). One of their big issues, they say, is the government's constant attempts to take animals away from their human companions, and "as the first candidate in the race to refuse contributions from real estate interests, Skaller is well equipped to advocate for pet owners and not greedy landlords." Skaller, the release also informs us, "is a vegetarian and animal lover. He and his family have two cats, Paige and Bat."
