Off-duty police officer charged in pedestrian death

Categories: Crime, Julia

An off-duty police officer was charged yesterday with vehicular manslaughter and driving while intoxicated after his jeep struck and killed a Brooklyn woman leaving a wedding.

Vionique Valnord, 32, was leaving a wedding performed by her father, Church of God pastor Varius Valnord, at 1 AM this morning. She was crossing the street to get into a cab with some friends when she was hit. She was unconscious at the scene, and died shortly afterwards at King's County Hospital.

Witnesses say that Andrew Kelly, 30, who works out of Bay Ridge, did not brake until after he hit Ms. Valnord. Commissioner Ray Kelly says that police at the scene reported smelling alcohol on his breath. One of the passengers in the car has since identified himself as a police officer. Police are said to be investigating whether any of the other passengers were as well.

Update: per the Post, the other two passengers were also off-duty police
