Primary Results: Vance In; Comptroller and P.A. Go to Runoffs; Council Incumbents Suffer; Rose Romps in Staten Island
In council district 1 embattled incumbent Alan Gerson got trounced by another longtime candidate, Margaret Chin. She got 39 percent, and there's no runoff in council primaries. Helen Sears of Queens and Kendall Stewart of Brooklyn also seem to have lost their seats. Among other incumbents, Maria Baez is in a squeaker with Fernando Cabrera that should take a few days to settle, at least. Same goes for Thomas White in district 28 in Queens; he's neck in neck with Lynn Nunes. And Darlene Mealy is only a few points up on Tracy Boyland. In Melinda Katz' district, Karen Koslowitz may or may not have it over Lynn Schulman (25-22 percent at last call), and Diana Reyna has two points on Maritza Davila.
The big shock: Debi Rose (pictured) just ran away in council district 49 in Staten Island, 54-39 percent, over incumbent Ken Mitchell, who won the seat in a special election against Rose in February. Staten Island may get its first black elected official!
