Yesterday evening 42 swimmers freestyled 10 kilometers in four loops along the west coast of Governor's Island, in the first annual New York City Pro Swim. Germany's Thomas Lurz won the men's event in 1:47:41.5, and Brazil's Poliana Okimoto took the women's in 2:04:40.8. The ProSwim is an accredited FINA event. Swimming World reports "rough water conditions... punished the swimmers up and down the course," and that contender Chad Ho of South Africa "was picked up by a wave and surprisingly found himself standing on a rock." He nonetheless reentered the water and finished fourth, putting him among the top eight finishers who shared $25,000 in prize money
