Yanks' Yom Kippur Shanda Repaired By Anthony Weiner

In April Anthony Weiner, at the behest of Jewish groups, made good and sure that the Jets didn't play football after sundown on Yom Kippur, getting the league to change the time of a September 27 game at the Meadowlands. Weiner did the same thing to Major League Baseball treatment this week: the league had moved a Yankees-Red Sox game for that day from 1 p.m. to 8 p.m., presumably to avail the greater TV revenue opportunities of a nighttime broadcast. And in New York! The Yankees said they had no control over MLB's actions.

Weiner wrote to Baseball Commissioner Bud Selig and, cannily, ESPN, saying "there's no reason why the largest Jewish community in the country should be punished for a last-minute scheduling swap." The game was subsequently changed back. "[Selig] said he agreed," says Weiner, "and that he had heard from his own rabbi that this was a problem." What! There are Jews in the front office? Somewhere Moe Berg is smiling.
