Rallye on Sunday

Contestants for the Village Voice Ninth Annual Sports Car and Automobile Rallye will begin lining up at the starting grid on the east side of Washington Square Park at 11 a.m. on Sunday, August 1.

The rallye, not a speed contest, usually takes the form of a straight time and distance contest with penalty points for not following instructions, the scheduled route, and not checking in at selected locations. In past years, if a sufficient number of "great cars" arrived at the grid in a sort of al fresco Concours d'Elegance awards were given for quality and "class."

Among the entries this year are a West German Amphi-car -- a hybrid automobile as much at home on Lake George as on the West Side Drive, Land Rovers, Vauxhalls, Triumphs, MGs, Jaguars, Porsches, Studebakers, Chevrolets, Chryslers -- and not a single VW. Last year's rallye was nearly an all-VW event.

Cars will be dispatched at one-minute intervals after the noon hour; remaining behind will be special exhibit cars, antiques, and the various control cars of The Voice. The Rallye will end at the Limelight Cafe on Seventh Avenue South.
