Diaz: Come to The Bronx and Get a $275 Laptop (Tell 'Em the Voice Sent You!)
As part of the Beep's "Smart Start to the School Year" program, Diaz and Ayala got donors, including Con Edison and the Internal Revenue Service, to collect and contribute the laptops; Per Scholas refurbished them, making it possible "for these computers to be available to many Bronx families who would otherwise be unable to afford them," says Diaz.
You don't have to prove residency to get one. (Details below the fold)...
Applicants only need "mention that they heard about this promotion through the Village Voice," says Damien Howard of Per Scholas, "and we will honor the pricing." You can even come straight to the warehouse at 1575 Bronx River Avenue (near the Parkway) during business hours (M-F 9 a.m.-5 p.m.) and pay for pick it up the same day, or you can call 718-991-8400 or 800-877-4068 and have it delivered.
The laptops have Pentium IV processors, free Channel 13/WNET educational software, full internet capability, a free 60-day limited warranty, and free lifetime access to a bilingual, toll-free help desk.
