Madoff Makes News with Cellmate, Cocaine, Mets, and Pizza
Kudos to Bernie Madoff's publicists; he gets more press in prison than most criminals get while they're walking around free. The Post breathlessly reports that at the Butner Federal Correctional Complex Madoff takes the lower bunk while "a 21-year-old inmate convicted of drug crimes" gets the penthouse, and "eats pizza cooked by an inmate convicted of child molestation." The News tells us that the offices of Madoff Securities were awash in cocaine ("it was known as the 'North Pole'") and hosted parties with "topless waitresses who wore little more than G-strings."
Oh, and there's a Mets angle: court papers allege that, while all we'd heard was that the Wilpons got screwed in the Madoff Ponzi scheme, an entity called Mets Limited Partnership scored $47.8 million from it. Mets LP, which lists its address as "Shea Stadium," had $829,230 left in the Madoff account when he was found out, and applied to be reimbursed, but had moved tons of Madoff money before then. Now the government liquidator is now looking into the alleged profit -- based, as it would have been, on Madoff's colossal fraud -- and how deeply involved Mets LTD is with the actual Mets.
