Local Democrats
desire to distance themselves and the electorate from state senator Hiram Monserrate, recently
convicted of a lesser charge in an attack on his girlfriend, and tonight the Queens Democratic Party, the
Post confirms, will announce that it is
backing a challenger for his seat for 2010. Assemblyman
Jose Peralta is mainly known to us for his flair for self-publicity, as when he
celebrated the opening of a public toilet in Corona (
pictured), and for
aggressively enlisting the Dominican vote for Freddy Ferrer in the last mayoral campaign. He has also shown some creativity in fighting crime in his district,
calling in the Guardian Angels to patrol after a vicious rape there. We suspect Queens Crap and its readers
will be supporting him in any case.
Monserrate is getting both barrels today, as the Citizens Union and three other groups filed a complain in Albany demanding he be forced to reveal more information about the contributions he's been getting for a legal defense fund.
