A Maryland man has been arrested and charged with drunk driving and manslaughter after causing an accident that killed a Ukrainian man who survived the Chernobyl disaster.

Jorge Cortes, 26, of Langham, Md. slammed into a car driven by Eugene Malinsky, 48, of West First Street in Brooklyn, killing him, and critically injuring his 19-year-old stepson. Cortes was charged with drunken driving, criminally negligent homicide, and manslaughter. The Daily News reported that Cortes ran a red light.

Relatives of Malinsky told the News that he was diagnosed with cancer after the Chernobyl Nuclear Power Plant contaminated the area with radioactivity in 1986. But, they said, the cancer was in remission.
