LOCATION: 731 E. 224 Street, The Bronx.

The police have arrested Jamal Blair, 18, of East 233rd Street in the Bronx, in the murder of an elderly bystander struck by a stray bullet in her own home Tuesday. Blair is charged with murder and illegal weapons possession.

Sadie Mitchell, 92, was hit in the hip by the stray bullet while she walked from her kitchen to her living room to watch a game show. The bullet "migrated" to her lungs, Police Commissioner Ray Kelly said.

The Daily News reported that 55-year resident of the home crawled to a phone and called her best friend for help. Her friend ran to her side, found her bleeding heavily, and called 911. Doctors at Jacobi Medical Center couldn't save her.

The shooting was sparked by a fight between rival gangs from her block and the Edenwald Houses, a public housing development a couple of blocks away.

Mitchell was remembered as a stalwart member of her church and a dedicated volunteer. Mayor Michael Bloomberg likened the shooting to the Virginia Tech massacre. "We are letting kids and criminals get guns," he told reporters. "We have the equivalent of a Virginia Tech every single day in this country."
