Ted Williams' Head Even More Banged Up Than We Thought

Even the most die-hard of Yankees fans might feel a little pity for their Red Sox counterparts today. The Daily News reports that legendary Red Sox slugger Ted Williams' frozen head was used in batting practice at the Alcor Life Extension clinic. Williams' legacy took a different kind of hit earlier this summer, when Derek Jeter surpassed him on the MLB all-time hit list. But even in the afterlife, there seems to be no end to the indignities William's frozen head must receive every few years, after he underwent cryogenic freezing upon his death. In 2003, CBS news reported that Williams had been decapitated, his body was stored separately, and his head had "been shaved, drilled with holes and accidentally cracked 10 times".

But wait! The fun didn't end there for poor Ted's not-so-excellent postmortem adventure, according to Larry Johnson, a former executive and whistle blower at Alcor. In his new book Frozen, Johnson doesn't leave much hope that if a cure for death is found, your frozen self will be in good shape to take advantage of the opportunity. In an Alcor Albacore allegation, Williams' "head was balanced on an empty can of Bumble Bee tuna to keep it from sticking to the bottom of its case." When it was taken out of its case, Johnson alleges another Alcor employee tried to remove the fused tuna can by beating it with a monkey wrench. He missed, banging Williams' frozen head and sending "tiny pieces of frozen head" flying around the room.

Red Sox, today we feel your (cold hearted) pain.
