USS New York, Navy Ship Built with WTC Steel, Heads for New York

The USS New York, a U.S. Navy vessel partly built with steel from the ruins of the World Trade Center, has begun its voyage from Louisiana to its namesake city. The ship's name was authorized at the suggestion of then-Governor George Pataki in 2002 to honor victims of and responders to the 9/11 attacks; eight tons of steel from the Towers was forged into the bow stem. After receiving visitors last weekend, the ship left Avondale this morning and is expected to be here by November 2nd, and to be commissioned in ceremonies on the 7th, before heading to its home port at Norfolk, Virginia.

The New York Post has commissioned a member of the ship's crew, "U.S. Navy Operations Specialist Cecilia, of Newark," to blog the ship's journey to New York. "Never in a million years," she says, "did I think that I would be serving on a U.S. Navy vessel that was built in the remembrance of the event that took place on 9/11." The USS New York's motto is "Never Forget."
