The USS New York, which contains 7.5+ tons of steel salvaged from the wreckage at Ground Zero, invited visitors on board for the first time this weekend. Northrup Grumman employees were allowed to bring family and friends aboard the New York, which has been under construction since 2004 at Northrup's New Orleans-area Avondale shipyard. The ship will be will be leaving Louisiana for New York on Oct. 13, and will be commissioned here on Nov. 7.

The San Antonio-class amphibious New York, which is dedicated to New York and new yorkers, is also the first of three ships to be dedicated by the Navy to the victims of 9/11. The Somerset will be named after the county where Flight 93 went down in PA, and the Arlington after the country which contains the Pentagon.

The New York was under construction during Hurricane Katrina, but was not damaged.
