Coyote spotted in Queens

Animal Control has set traps for what the Public Safety Department is calling a coyote or a coyote hybrid on the grounds of the Rochdale Village cooperative complex in South Jamaica.

The NYS DEC says that the biggest risk from coyotes is that they carry diseases, including distemper, hepatitis, parvo virus, rabies, mange, and tularemia. They also sometimes eat cats and small dogs. Human attacks are rare, but as with skunks, if they don't seem to be afraid of you, you should be afraid of them.

Rochdale Village is providing security escorts to and from the parking lots to residents who request them.

Coyotes have also been spotted and caught in the Bronx, Manhattan and Staten Island.
