Cruelty-Free Pre-Thanksgiving with Lou Reed, Others at Tavern on the Green

Planning to tuck into a nice, fat turkey this Thanksgiving? What are you, sick? Turkeys are your animal companions.

Repent of your carnivorism in the traditional way -- with celebrities! On November 22, the Sunday before Thanksgiving, Russell Simmons will host "Celebration FOR The Turkeys" -- an event held at Tavern on the Green by Farm Sanctuary, which "promotes compassionate living through rescue, education and advocacy" and is circulating a petition to have Presidentially-pardoned turkeys sent to them rather than to Disney World -- which is apparently traditional, and where the turkeys are "displayed as attractions while they await premature death," says Farm Sanctuary...

Simmons will be joined by Lou Reed, Laurie Anderson, Peter Max, and Ally Sheedy. There'll be a silent auction, Jonathan Safran Foer (Everything is Illuminated, Eating Animals) will give a talk, nothwithstanding that some purists complain he is not strictly vegan. Everyone will enjoy a vegan brunch, and a few turkeys will be spared. Admission is $150. If you don't have it, achieve a similar effect at home with some Velvet Underground and Run D.M.C. records, a Jones Tofurkey and Gravy Soda ("two great tastes you may not have expected in a carbonated beverage"), and maize.
