Broadway Triangle Rezoning Blocked

bwaytriangle.jpg On Monday the city council approved a rezoning plan for the Broadway Triangle in North Brooklyn that would move out several small manufacturing businesses to make way for affordable housing units. Yesterday a judge blocked the plan over the objections of the district's councilman, David Yassky, and council speaker Christine Quinn.

The Broadway Triangle Community Coalition of community groups who petitioned for the stay claim that by pushing the plan through without proper review and granting contracts for the housing to the United Jewish Organization and the Ridgwood Bushwick Senior Citizens Council without a bidding process, the plan violates the rights of members of minority groups residing or doing business in the area.

Manhattan Supreme Court will conduct a hearing in March. The city intends to fight back.
