Council Approves 70 New Street Names -- Including Sean Bell Way

seanbellleftsmall.jpgThe city council has passed a bill renaming a three-block stretch of Liverpool Street in Queens Sean Bell Way, after the young groom-to-be shot dead by police nearby in 2006. Mayor Bloomberg is expected to sign.

The bill drew high-profile objections, but this is only the most contentious of the 70 new street names approved in the bill, some of which are listed after the jump:

Ron Carey Avenue, 28th Avenue between 203rd and 206th Street in Queens, memorializing the recently deceased Teamster leader;

Anthony Aristedes Delgado Way, intersection of Palmetto Street and Central Avenue, Brooklyn, where Delgado was struck and killed while riding his bike;

Dr. Michael Brienza Way, intersection of 15th Avenue and Cropsey Avenue in Brooklyn, in honor of a young dentist who died in April;

Francesco "Frankie" Loccisano Way, intersection of 63rd Street and 14th Avenue, Brooklyn, in honor of a 17-year-old cancer victim;

Janice Marie Knight Street, 40th Street between Lenox Road and Clarkson Avenue, in honor of the deceased former principal of P.S. 235, now renamed in her memory;

Custodian Martin T. Cavanagh Way, intersection of Benziger Avenue and Daniel Low Terrace, Staten Island, in honor of a custodial engineer who died last year of Lou Gehrig's Disease;

Ken Seigelman Way, West 5th Street between Avenue V and Wolf Place, Brooklyn, in honor of the borough's former Poet Laureate;

Edith Copeland Baldwin Way, intersection of Tilden Street and Barnes Avenue in The Bronx, in honor of the former labor organizer and chairperson of the board of directors of Tilden Towers II;

Several streets in Queens, renamed because of "the growing concern of Hamilton Beach residents over numbered streets that shared the same names in nearby Howard Beach."
