Gay Marriage Debate On Now in Albany! Vote May Actually Be Held! (Update: Valesky Switches to Yes)
Amazingly, the special sessions in Albany have finally yield something of a result: the New York State Senate is at this very moment debating the gay marriage bill.
The Marriage Equality Act, bill S4401 ("Relates to individuals ability to marry"), cleared the Senate rules committee late this morning, opening it to debate and a vote. If passed, the bill, already approved by the Assembly and fully supported by Governor Paterson, would legalize gay and lesbian marriages in New York State.
While its passage is hardly assured, there has never been an up-or-down vote on the issue in the Senate, something many supporters and detractors have long pushed for.
Update: Previously anti-gay-marriage state senator David Valesky (D-Oneida) says he'll vote yes.
