Judge: NYPD Must Give Up Race Data on Cop Shootings

While the city council debates the naming of a street after Sean Bell, several other black people shot at by cops are turning up in the news. The New York Civil Liberties Union has been asking the NYPD for police shooting data broken out by the race of the victim. Supreme Court Judge Joan A. Madden ruled last week, and it was announced today, that NYPD has to turn over all the racial details on police shootings from 1997 to 2006 to NYCLU.

NYCLU says they want the data so they can "give New Yorkers the full story on police shootings, not the NYPD's spin." Madden said the cops hadn't shown a compelling public interest in hiding the information.

Bell was shot outside a bachelor party in 2006 by police who said they thought he was armed, which turned out not to be the case. The shooters were acquitted of all charges in April of last year. Some people think race has something to do with it.
