Early this morning a sewage plant in Port Richmond, Staten Island was evacuated after a DEP worker and a couple of electricians were overcome by fumes there. Investigation suggests that the ill effects werre caused by a petroleum product that smells like gasoline and was not supposed to be in the wastewater the plant treats.

A worker told the Staten Island Advance that the gasoline smell was very strong, whereas the plant "typically smells like fecal matter" (not a direct quote from the worker).

The men were lucky to get out with their lives. Last June three workers at a garbage recycling facility in Queens were killed by toxic fumes.
