Bruce Blakeman to Announce for Senate on Sunday

Categories: Featured, Politics
blakeman.jpgMaybe Pete King and Susan Molinari haven't got the stomach to run against Kirsten Gillibrand as the Republican candidate for Senate this year, but Bruce Blakeman does. Having floated the possibility in December, he today notifies us that he'll announce formally on Sunday in Valley Stream, his "boyhood home."

Interestingly, he is to be accompanied at the announcement by Al D'Amato, who was prominently on stage when Governor Paterson announced Gillibrand's appointment to the Senate last year

Blakeman previously served on the Port Authority Board of Commissioners and the Hempstead Town Board, and has been Majority Leader of the Nassau County Legislature. He ran for state comptroller in 1998, when he was beaten by Carl McCall.

That was his last campaign until last year, when Blakeman ran briefly for New York City Mayor, praising Mike Bloomberg's tenure; when Bloomberg got into the 2009 race, Blakeman left to him the field.

Blakeman, best known in the tabs as "Beatle Gal Pal's Ex," recently characterized the Obama Presidency as a failure. His brother Brad Blakeman is the former president of Freedom's Watch, a very right wing advocacy group, and a staffer for the Bush Administration, and has compared Nancy Pelosi to Neville Chamberlain.
