Can't-Do Spirit: Mayor Bloomberg, Others Say New York Can't Handle Terror Trials

bloombergcrash2.jpgApparently sensitive to the recommendation of the local community board that the terror trials of KSM et alia be moved far away from themselves, Mayor Bloomberg has reversed himself and now asks that the federal trials be relocated. "It would be great if the federal government could find a site that didn't cost a billion dollars, which using downtown will," he told reporters yesterday.

The Mayor had previously said it would be "fitting that 9/11 suspects face justice near the World Trade Center site where so many New Yorkers were murdered."

The Mayor's flip-flop excites the fervor of the New York Post, whose restaurant critic Steve Cuozzo is commissioned to beat up Obama.

Cuozzo attacks the President like a plate of fresh linguine, calling the trials his "declaration of war against downtown" and adding, "It's as if Obama blames the neighborhood for hosting the horror of 9/11."

Among other local politicians who have recently decided they want the trials moved -- or, as an alternative, their security arrangements subsidized with new Federal funds -- are Senator Kirsten Gillibrand, Representative Nydia Velasquez, and Senator Chuck Schumer.

In their zeal to beat up President Obama on this issue, the trial-movers seem not to notice that they are loudly proclaiming to the world that the federal prosecution of terrorists accused of attacking New York is something New York itself is inadequate to handle. Well, this whole "capital of the world" thing was getting a little old, anyway.
