Wyclef Jean's Haiti Charity Made Dubious Payments: Smoking Gun

wjeanleft.jpg
Governor Paterson's office suggests a number of venues to which citizens may donate Haiti relief funds, among them the Yele Haiti site, whose sponsor Wyclef Jean has used Twitter ("text 'Yele' to 501501") to score over $1 million in contributions for the devastated country.

The effort is heroic. The Smoking Gun, however, adds a sour note: They examine Yele Haiti's tax forms for 2005 through 2007, which the organization only filed last year, and find that the non-profit paid thousands of dollars to a studio co-owned by Jean and Jerry Duplessis, one of Yele Haiti's board members. Jean and Duplessis are also said to have a "controlling interest" in Telemax, S.A., to which Yele Haiti paid a quarter of a million dollars for "TV airtime and production services."

Yele Haiti has received large donations and grants in the past from Angelina Jolie, the Hollywood Foreign Press, telecommunications company ComCEL/Voila, and others. Image via Wikipedia.
