4-Alarm Fire in Jackson Heights

Update: Thirteen businesses were destroyed and over 100 people were evacuated from their homes. Over 200 firefighters were eventually called in. Four suffered minor injuries. Investigators are looking into the cause of the blaze.

Update: ABC News is reporting that the fire was extinguished by 1:15. No injuries are reported.

Firefighters in Queens are battling a 4-alarm fire which broke out in the Acme furniture store at 84-09 37th Avenue in Jackson Heights at 10 this morning. According to ABC News, more than 180 firefighters are at the fire.

The fire is also endangering local businesses at 35-59, 35-61, 35-63, and 35-65 84th St. Residents of a 6-story building at 35-43 84th St, which has not yet been affected by the fire, have been evacuated as a safety precaution. Eyewitness News is reporting that the MTA has dispatched buses as a temporary shelter for displaced local residents.

Both 37th Avenue from 82nd St to 85th St and 84th St from 35th Ave to Roosevelt Avenue have been closed to vehicular traffic. The Q33 has been re-routed to avoid the affected streets.

The Q33 bus line has been re-routed around the fire scene.
