Gordon Lightfoot Not Dead, Despite Obituary

lightfoothoaxsmall.jpg
Here's why we maybe aren't as fast on the draw as some news sites: The Canwest News Service reported today that folksinger Gordon Lightfoot, 71, was dead, and obits ran in some papers. (In case the Edmonton Journal thinks better of leaving this up, we have a larger screen grab after the jump.) The report was attributed "to sources close to the singer."

Not too close, apparently: Gordon Lightfoot is alive.

Some outlets, like PhillyBurbs.com, got as far as reminiscence ("Bob Dylan loved Gordon Lightfoot, and so did I") before the hoax, allegedly spread via Twitter, was discovered. Lightfoot is pictured here assuring fans that he is not dead.

The Sault St. Marie News had the wit to update, "Gordon Lightfoot is no longer dead." Lightfoot's hits include If You Could Read My Mind and The Wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald, which was covered by the Butthole Surfers.
