Kerik asked the judge to "allow me to return to my wife and two little girls as soon as possible." The judge, Stephen Robinson, who had jailed Kerik during his trial for suspicion of politicking his case in the press, was unsympathetic.
"The fact that Mr. Kerik would use that event [9/11] for personal gain and aggrandizement is a dark place in the soul for me," said Robinson. Nonetheless Kerik did not get the max, which could have been 61 years.
Kerik, who has been out on bail since November, will report to prison on May 17.
Kerik was indicted last year for various offenses revealed in his background check when the Bush Administration was sizing him up for the cabinet post, including employing contractors who had business before the city while he was Commissioner, and receiving discounted services owing to his position.
While jailed during the trial, Kerik was evaluated by psych workers as suffering under the stress of imprisonment and moved to a mental health unit.
