During a training run for the 2010 Winter Olympics, luger Nodar Kumaritashvili of the Republic of Georgia went over a wall and smashed into a metal pole. Observers say he was going very fast; one of the other lugers hit 96 mph on a run yesterday. He was airlifted to the hospital, but has been declared dead.

The Whistler Sliding Center course is notoriously treacherous, and the section of it on which Kumaritashvili lost control features the world's longest luge drop -- 152 meters.

Kumaritashvili was 22. Training exercises are off for the day. Competition is supposed to start on Saturday.
