Sheepshead Bay "Hell House," Once Home to Winsor McCay, Now a Dump

• To suggest that these people are not the "Best Tenants" is malapropriate and discriminatory. Is this the Village Voice I'm reading or some other NY yellow rag owned by a man whose initials are M.R? These people have very little in the way of other places to go in this neighborhood of ever rising rents and less reasonable places to eat. The house should be restored to its former glory including the sections that were removed from its frontage for who knows why. The home of Winsor McCay was a wonderful piece of architecture as per the link. • Some of the tenants are illegal aliens. In the past there have been habitual drug users and others with social problems. The house is poorly maintained. That along with the presence of "undesirable" tenants will surely mean that sooner or later this important house will be demolished. Old timers like myself, who remember this house in better days, will be heartbroken, but many more recent arrivals, who would like to see the community of Sheepshead Bay totally populated with condos, are already hopeful that bulldozer day for this building is not long in coming. We need help. We need a buyer who will agree to restore tis building to its former glory, rather than supervise its demolition. This house is history. Its history for Sheepshead Bay, and history for the larger world as well.

• Best tenants? What in the world does that mean? Why are tenants who either don't have much money, or can't do get a job due to mental illness or disability, labeled in such negative terms. It's a reality that needs to be accepted rather than stigmatized. Either way, no one wants to live with bed bugs. Landlords need to step up preventative options like "hot" rooms (Vancouver, BC). Tenants can bring infested items to a room that has heaters that will kill bed bugs in their infested items. Treating a building comprehensively from the top down, and then assisting residents with compliance is the only answer, as many cannot comply due to a variety of reasons. Stop blaming the poor for social woes. Being solution oriented is the answer.
