The Subway Sucks, But at Least It Isn't the DC Metro (Which Derailed, Again)
![]() |
Last March two Red Line cars derailed with no injuries. In June, nine people were killed in a Red Line collision. In November two trains collided in a rail yard, injuring three Metro workers.
The Metro has comfy seats, attractive stations, and offers (when it is not going off the tracks) a smooth ride. But it closes at 3 a.m. on weekends and at midnight on weekdays. And its safety record is trending badly. At least when our trains kill people, it's usually because they're on the tracks.
New York subway accidents, let alone derailments, are now rare and it's been a few years since anyone was seriously hurt in one. Count your blessings, citizens!
