ACORN Shuts Down, Offering "Gimmie" of Schadenfreude to Today's Angriest People

Cue any number of "...Drops" or "...Falls Off"-related headlines by bloggers and reporters trying to leave the office as quickly as they can.

Yes, ACORN, the bad-press-beleaguered community activist organization, is shutting down, but not because of the "teabugger" scandal that led some chapters to change their names to distance themselves from the home base. It's the economy, stupid:

National ACORN spokesman Kevin Whelan says the organization's board decided to close remaining state affiliates and field offices by April 1 because of falling revenues. Some other national operations will continue operating for at least several weeks before shutting for good.

Though their falling revenues probably has something to do with the fact that they can't get a hit of positive press if their organization's life depended on it, which it very well might have. This was the result.

ACORN has long been a target of media speculation and scrutiny (even besides that whole entrapment thing two of their dumber employees fell for), especially from conservative voting contingents. And because the same people who think those receiving health care from the government should basically die also see community organizers as awful people who should also basically die, this is going to make at least someone's Monday a little easier to bear.
