Two Slashed to Death in Subway Melee; Motive? A Tossed Trash Bag

LOCATION: The 1 Train at at Varick Street and Houston Street, Lower Manhattan.

Well, with all the hubbub over the jump in the murder rate, Mayor Bloomberg and Police Commissioner Ray Kelly can't be too happy about this one: two relatively young men stabbed to death on the 1 train over the relatively minor tossing of a trash bag.

Darnell Morel, 24, of Martense Street in Brooklyn, and Ricardo Williams, 24, of Bergen Street in Brooklyn, were killed in the melee. A third man was stabbed in the arm and neck and was listed in stable condition at St. Vincent's Hospital.

Apparently, the fight began after a trash bag was inadvertently tossed. Two groups of men began fighting. One of them pulled a knife and went after the others.

As the Voice first reported last week, murders are up 23 percent this year. So are rapes, burglaries and assaults. Meanwhile, the number of cops has dropped sharply, especially those on routine patrol. If the crime stats continue to go south, so will Bloomberg and Kelly's poll numbers.
